Mr.Gillies continued:"the number of men employed at our Kowloon
establishment gives a daily average of over 4,000 and the sum
paid in wages monthly is over 180,000 and when the new lock
and the new workshops are complete, it is anticipated that the
above figures will be very largely increased, clearly indica-
ting that the Colony of HongKong derives many advantages from
the employment of so much labour and placing in circulation
such a vast amount of money in monthly payments."
In a covering letter on the 10th November the
Director of Public Works stated that he does not consider a
premium of 30 cents a foot too high and suggested a Crown rent
of $287 per acre.
In a minute dated the 15th November Bis Excellency
directed the Director of Fublic Works to inform the Company
that the Government was not prepared to sell the land co less
terms than those laid down by the Admiralty and the Military
Authorities, viz: (1) premium 90 cents a foot: (2) Crown rent
$350 per acre: (2) the expense of forming a new cable reserve
shifting the existing cables thereto to be borne by the Cock
Company.
Vr.Gillies replying on the 14th December says (1)
the Company offer 25 cents a square foot: (2) agree to $25) Crown rent per acre: (3) will undertake the expense of forming
a new cable reserve, out submit that as the cable cwners are to
have the privilege of carrying their cables through land which will probably become the property of the Company, they
should lay the caples themselves. The Directors again press
for a 999 years' lease and refuse the right of prior entry to
ships
